Until October of 1999, Rex Heinke was a partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, a huge law firm based in Los Angeles, California. He is also Co-Chaired its Intellectual Property group.
He received his B.A. from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1971 and his J.D. from the Columbia University School of Law in 1975. He then clerked for the Honorable Frederick J.R. Heebe, Chief Judge, Eastern District of Louisiana.
He specializes in trial and appellate litigation with particular emphasis on First Amendment and other constitutional issues, as well as intellectual property and entertainment law issues.

He is currently the lead attorney for the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post in their suit for copyright infringement against Free Republic.
He is listed in the Best Lawyers in America, Euromoney Publications' Guide to the World's Leading Experts In Trademark Law, and in the Los Angeles Business Journal's Who's Who in Law, which highlighted the 100 most prominent business attorneys in Los Angeles.
He has also lectured and written extensively on free speech, intellectual property, appellate law, and entertainment law issues for a variety of organizations. Recent engagements include a speech to the Practicing Law Institute on litigating libel and privacy cases and teaching a course on media law to journalism students at the University of Southern California.
He is the author of Media Law published by the Bureau of National Affairs -- a leading treatise on the legal problems of journalists and the media. He is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Media Law Reporter.
